Hello, my wife and I plan on retiring and going to Europe in March 2022. We are trying to decide on the two Dutch companies or the Eurocamping Cars strategy. Now with the change in owners of the company do you still recccomend them? Are you doing 90 days in and 90 out of the Schengen area? Thanks for your advice.

    1. Todd says:

Hi Norman and thanks for contacting us. Currently we are not in Europe but are planning our return in October of 2021. Our first year+ we did the whole 90 in 90 out Schengen thing and then we applied for a 1 year French extended visa and we toured around on that and focused more on the parts of Western Europe we had rushed through the previous year.

As far as the buying strategy, I’m not very well versed in the Dutch options as I suspect they may have changed since we first looked at them. Our vehicle is currently being stored at Eurocamping and our only experience with the new owners has been during the lockdowns. It seems like response times for e-mail inquiries has been a bit slow but they have had a lot of things going on behind the scenes.

Best of luck and safe travels!

    Hi Shani & Todd.

Tell us about your vehicle? I see it’s a Hymer but which model and year is it? Are you happy with its performance so far? We are eying a used class B Hymer for an upcoming trip to Europe but we’re also a little concerned about the diesel restrictions in several cities across Europe. Thank you for your input.

    1. Todd says:

      Hello Stefan,

We purchased a 2012 Hymer T594 Premium 50 Edition. It’s nearly 7 meters long, partially integrated, and has the all important automatic transmission we wanted. Ours is built on the Fiat Ducato truck chassis, the most popular choice of truck chassis for camping cars in Europe. We also got the 180 Multijet which was the most powerful Diesel engine offered in 2012 (as far as we could tell). Our Ducato chassis is also the Maxi which makes it more buff and has larger rims and tires.

We have been very happy with the performance so far. Having the more powerful engine has been really nice on any of the mountain roads we’ve been on. Our Hymer has very nice finishes and is the right size for us. We also outfitted her with a Gaslow system for the LPG needs and this or similar is a must have if you are long term and going to multiple countries.

We never take the van close to historical/city centers unless we are driving through on a toll road or freeway. The RV is too big, traffic is unpredictable and the skinny roads just aren’t worth it. If we are planning on visiting a city we will park up well outside (or find a aire or campsite) and use public transport to get to the city center.

      Hope this helps. Good luck.

I’m curious to know if you are doing work as you travel? My husband and I would like to travel around Europe for a couple of years, and are looking for a way to make money as we go.

    1. Todd says:

      Hello Mary,
It is totally possible to do remote work while you travel in Europe. One of the key things is to get a good European SIM with a lot of data that you can hotspot for your laptop to use when the campground WiFi isn’t so good. Most of the campsites do have WiFi but obviously varies. The Airbnb places we’ve chosen all have WiFi as well. One of the tricky things can be the time difference, but with a little flexibility that is manageable as well.

Hi, my name is Shabbir Zafari, and I am from Minnesota. I read your testimonial on EuroCamping Cars, and you said you purchased a motorhome through them. Do you still own the motorhome, and have you taken it outside of Europe?
We have the same plans as you guys, and want to buy a motorhome through them to travel both inside and outside of Europe (like Asia and Africa). Would you be able to tell me about your experiences with them? Do you recommend doing business with them? I would really appreciate your input!
    Thanks in advance,
    Shabbir Zafari

    1. Todd says:

      Hello Shabbir,

Thank you for contacting us. I think in order to thoroughly answer your questions I should send you an email. Travelling Europe by motorhome is a very rewarding experience that I would recommend to anyone that gets the opportunity.

      Cheers,
      Todd

    Shani & Todd-

I am loving your Chile descriptions, place names and learning about Gaucho Gil, folk hero. Any literature or films to enhance travels through the area? Also, aside from the arepas, was there any other indigenous cooking or Chilean dishes to experience? Our family is planning a visit to Chile for New Years 2025. You provide such great insight in your summaries. I love your travel images paired with your journaling. Safe travels!

    1. Todd says:

      Hi Jill,

Thanks for reading our blog. Great to hear you will be visiting Chile. In South America each country lays claim to the empanada and they all vary slightly – Chile style includes hard boiled egg and olive so that’s a bit different. If you go to the Patagonia region the lamb is amazing and should not be missed. Of course, the wine in Chile and Argentina is very good and affordable. In Northwest Argentina llama burgers and empanadas were excellent and I imagine they have them in Chile as well. Also in Northwest Argentina there are humitas (a sweet corn tamale), regular tamales and the tortilla, a basic street food staple that is essentially a ham and cheese quesadilla.

      All the best,
      Todd
